FOUNDING STORY

I made the first bottle for myself.

Twenty-five+ years designing products for other people, and the one I could not stop thinking about was the one I needed and nobody had made.

I get migraines. That is the whole reason this company exists.

Somewhere in the long list of things that people with chronic conditions try, I ended up reading about nicotine and the receptors that sit in peripheral tissue. It is a real area of research, genuinely interesting, and I am not going to tell you what it did for me. That is between you and your doctor, and I have opinions about companies that blur that line.

What I will tell you is what I saw when I went looking for a product.

WHAT EXISTED

Nothing was designed for this.

Patches were made for smoking cessation. Beige, opaque, the size of a playing card, dosed at 7, 14, and 21 milligrams for a purpose that has nothing to do with why I was holding one. People cut them into pieces with kitchen scissors and guessed at what was left.

I am a designer. I have spent a career watching people improvise around products that were not made for them, and that improvising is always the brief. A guess with scissors is not a dose. A beige rectangle is not something you wear on your face.

So the question was not whether the science was settled. The question was why, in a category people were clearly already improvising in, no one had made the obvious thing.

WHAT I MADE

A kitchen, a scale, and a handful of failed batches.

The first versions were too thick. Emulsifying wax at thirteen percent, which is closer to a balm than a lotion, sat on the skin instead of going into it. The second problem was that an unpreserved cream lasts about three weeks in a refrigerator; it is not a product, it is a science project.

What I landed on is 8.33 milligrams per milliliter in a ten-milliliter matte black pump bottle. One press dispenses one milligram. Not a range, not a guess, not a piece of something larger cut down to size. The pump decides the dose before the bottle ever reaches you.

That is the entire product. It is not complicated. It just had not been done.

WHAT I WILL NOT DO

Sell you a promise I cannot keep.

SpotDose has no clinical trial behind it. There is a body of receptor research that is real and worth reading, most of it conducted on a delivery model that is not ours, and a pooled analysis of the surgical trials that did not find a significant effect. I have put all of it on the science page, including the parts that do not help me.

I would rather build a smaller company on what is true than a larger one on what converts. If that is an unusual thing to lead with, it is only because the alternative has worked so well for so many people.
